How I Scored a Cheaper Business Class Flight to Tokyo

If you ever think travel deals have disappeared, let me tell you about the time I flew WestJet business class from Calgary to Tokyo for less than Delta’s premium economy from Seattle and it was totally worth it.

The Unexpected Deal

I was planning my trip to Tokyo and started comparing flights from different cities. But when I checked flights out of Seattle on Delta, premium economy was the best option for the long flight.

That’s when I stumbled on a deal that didn’t make sense at first:

WestJet Business Class from Calgary to Tokyo — cheaper than Delta premium economy from Seattle.

Yes, you read that right. Premium economy. On an American carrier. From a major U.S. hub. And yet, Calgary > Tokyo in business class cost less.

At first I thought it was a glitch. I refreshed the page. Tried incognito. But no, the price was real.

Pro tip: Always check multiple departure cities & carriers, sometimes flying north (south, east or west) can save hundreds, even thousands.

Why I Chose the WestJet Flight

Here’s what made this deal irresistible:

1. Business Class Comfort at Premium Economy Prices

Business class on long flights makes a huge difference, more space, fully flat seats, priority boarding, lounge access, better meals, and champagne. Being able to sleep on this 10+ hour flight was priceless.

2. WestJet’s Service

I was curious if WestJet could deliver international business class service as well as the big global carriers and they surpassed expectations. The flight attendants were warm and attentive, and the cabin was quiet and relaxing.

3. Value vs Cost

If I had paid for Delta premium economy, I’d have less space, fewer perks, and pay more. The math was simple: choosing Calgary + WestJet = better experience for less money. I also gave Westjet my Delta Skymiles information to get credit for the trip in Skymiles.

  • Westjet Business: $1,256 USD
  • Delta Premium Economy: $1,379 USD

Overnight in Vancouver

The catch? My itinerary connected through Vancouver, and the timing meant I needed a place to stay before my international departure the next morning.

That’s where the Fairmont Vancouver Airport came in.

Fairmont Vancouver Airport, Worth Every Penny

Staying at the Fairmont was a delight and honestly, one of the highlights of the pre-trip experience.

Here’s why it was perfect:

  • Direct access to the airport, no shuttles, no taxi hassles
  • Comfy bed and quiet rooms, essential before a long intercontinental flight
  • Great food and service, the restaurant and bar were cozy and delicious
  • Early check-in and luggage help made morning departures a breeze
  • Credit card points were used to book, so the cost was $0

If you ever need to reset between flights, this hotel turns an airport layover into a mini staycation.

Final Thoughts: Smart Travel Wins

Sometimes the best travel experiences come from being flexible and curious. If I’d stuck rigidly to Seattle departures or standard carriers, I would have paid way more for less comfort.

But by:

  • Checking different cities,
  • Search on Google Flights, Kayak, & Expedia to compare.
  • Considering alternative airlines,
  • And embracing layovers as experiences, not inconveniences…

…I ended up with a flight that felt first class, even if it wasn’t the most obvious choice.

Lesson for travelers:
Don’t just search for flights, search widely and think creatively. The best deal might be where you least expect it.
